Handwoven one strand at a time in the U.S.A., the straw version of the iconic Open Road represents the ultimate mix of western heritage and modern versatility. High-quality shantung straw and a firm finish give the Open Road Straw a lightweight, yet substantial feel. With its western-style crown and 2 ¾” town-friendly brim, the Open Road Straw easily transitions from country to city, and looks equally sharp on a woman or a man.
Introduced in 1937, the Open Road was originally sold with an open crown, which could then be creased to the customer’s liking. Since 1948, it has been finished with a traditional cattleman crease, and has been worn by modern pioneers and trailblazers ever since, from artists and outlaws to Presidents (including, most notably, LBJ, who was rarely photographed on his Texas ranch without his Open Road).
The Open Road Straw features a genuine sheepskin leather sweatband and a 4 ¼” crown outfitted with a grosgrain hat band and branding-iron hat pin bearing the initials “JBS”, a nod to our founder, John B. Stetson, whose pioneering legacy lives on in every hat we make.
